Howard Dean Speaks Out Against Bush's Handling of Lebanon Crisis

by Jay Allbritton
As the situation in the Lebanon and Israel becomes more dire, the relative silence of the Bush administration is glaring. It is also telling. It seems that the official position of the United States is to get out of the way and let Israel do our dirty work for us.

Under most dire foreign policy circumstances, usually the protocol is to keep partisan bickering to a minimum. However, it is clear that our President is making a huge mistake by refraining from reigning in Israel. Even though no one on Earth can change the course of what seems inevitable, Howard Dean did open his mouth on the subject.

From the San Diego Union Tribune:

"This country is in the worst shape since Richard Nixon, and probably before that," Dean said.

"We've lost the high moral high ground everywhere in the world. We want to be respected around the world again.

"We want our moral authority to be restored, because part of defending America is not just well-armed troops; it's having the high moral ground."

In an apparent reference to Israeli military action deep inside Lebanon, Dean said:

"If you think what's going on in the Middle East today would be going on if the Democrats were in control, it wouldn't, because we would have worked day after day after day to make sure we didn't get where we are today. We would have had the moral authority that Bill Clinton had when he brought together the Northern Irish and the IRA, when he brought together the Israelis and the Palestinians."

When President Bush cut off Bill Clinton's work in the region, he set the ground work for the chaos we are seeing today. It's called neglect. I hope, somehow, this situation doesn't get worse, but it will, because the damage is already done.
