In July, I wrote how the English language is being bastardized by innovation. Now, the American Literacy Council favors an end to what they call "illogical spelling". It was reported (The Washington Post, December 25, 2005) that reading proficiency among college students has declined to that point that "less that 5 percent of college graduates can read a complex book and extrapolate from it."

Is this the result of of technological innovation (multimedia such as MP3's, the internet, Instant Messaging, BBS's, videogaming, etc.) and the evolution of language and culture? Is Leet speak the future of our society? Did it begin as long ago as 1981 when Journey released "E5C4P3"? If ciphers are the vanguard of a new language, why not just teach hieroglyphics in school?
2v55 \X/3|55 - I'm too old to begin signing my name like this to be understood by anyone.Do we really want to live in this world?
